4/3/2021 - OC OVAL KICOFF 40: AUTISM AWARENESS NIGHT - TOMMY MEIER & ROBERT BUBLACK WIN BIG!

The 2021 racing season began Saturday night April 3rd at OCFS, the Legendary House Of Power, kicking off with a special Autism Awareness Night. The United Rentals DIRTcar Big Block Modifieds were in action alongside a full field of Arkel Motors Sportsman. A full night of qualifying action set the fields for both divisions as the Big Blocks competed in 40 lap feature event action and Sportsman in a 20 lap affair.

Over 40 United Rentals DIRTcar Big Block Modifieds entered for the first event of their power packed points chase season. Four heat events and two last chance qualifiers set the tone for the night. Jessica Friesen, Tommy Meier, Anthony Perrego, and Larry Wight picked up heat race wins while Tyler Boniface and Peter Britten were the winners of the last chance qualifiers.

After a "Last Man Standing" redraw, two of DIRTcar racing's biggest stars were placed on the front row of the 40 lap event; “Super Matt” Matt Sheppard and “Mr. Freeze” Stewart Friesen. At the start, the 2020 defending track champion Matt Sheppard took the lead, however after one lap was scored, a caution would be displayed for DIRTcar star “The Hile Driver” Chris Hile. At the same time smoke would be displayed out the rear of the Halmar 43 of Jimmy Horton. Multiple cautions would plague the early stages of the event, however once the field got going the action was non stop. Matt Sheppard maintained the lead while battling a charging Stewart Friesen. “The Ant-Man” Anthony Perrego would make his mark early on dueling with Friesen while trying to dethrone Sheppard of first place.

After about ten laps into the feature event, the battles throughout the field intensified with one notably standing out between “The White Knight” Marc Johnson, “Lighting” Larry Wight, and “The Waldwick Warrior” Tommy Meier. The trio would swap places with Meier finding his way into the top five right behind Billy Decker. Meier would not stop there, as he would get by “The Thrilla From Unadilla” Billy Decker. A mid race caution would came along to shake things up, this time for Matt Hitchcock. The next restart would be one that would set the tone for the remainder of the event. Matt Sheppard and Stewart Friesen would sit one and two with Perrego and Meier in tow. At the drop of the green, it was Tommy Meier who would make a three wide pass and take over second from Friesen. It wasn't too long after that Meier would work his way around defending champ Sheppard and go on to collect yet another win for the OCFS history books.  “What a great start to the season. Don’t even take it out of the trailer and leave it the way it is.” Explained Meier to his crew at the end of the night.

Meier's win means he is now locked into the United Rentals DIRTcar Modified "Final Eight". On July 10th's Modified season race, only 8 drivers will remain in competition for the championship, they either have to win a feature to be there, or be in the top 8 in points. If there are 7 different winners between now and then, only one driver will get in based on points. Either way, Tommy Meier is now in and is one step closer to that $25k champion's prize!

With more than 50 entries for the night, the Arkel Motors Sportsman had to narrow it down to a 24 car starting field. The amount of competition within the Sportsman ranks for the night ranged from defending 13 year old champion Tanner VanDoren to Multi time invading champion Tim Hartman. Six heat events and two last chance qualifiers created the field for the 20 lap event. Ryan Neiger, Jared LaBagh, Joey Bonetti, Joey Bruning, Josh Allen, and Kevin Stevens respectively won each heat as Chris Johnson and Tyler Corcoran won the last chance qualifiers.

After a redraw, it was Joey Bonetti and Jared LaBagh bringing the field to the green. In no time, Bonetti would find the lead. However right to the line on the first lap was a dead even drag race between Bonetti and LaBagh. Behind the duo was a returning “BK Speed” Brian Krummel. Krummel got into third quickly and found his way into second right after. A caution would come out shortly after for an incident in turn three. Krummel and LaBagh would restack the field and lead them to the restart. However this time invading Sportsman star Robert Bublak would make his presence known by getting around LaBagh and into the second position. Although Bublak charged hard, Krummel would stay out front all the way to the checkered flag waved. Unfortunately a technical infraction would plague the win of the returning Brian Krummel and Robert Bublak would take home the Diamond State Home Service Inc. $1200 bonus win. “I wasn’t expecting this at all. When the tech official came over and said you’re the first legal car I just laughed. I thought it was a joke. I only have been here about four times in the past.” Concluded a shocked Bublak in victory lane.
