NON-STOP RACING ON SATURDAY OF EASTERN STATES WEEKEND
358 Modifieds, Crate Sportsman, and 305 Sprint Cars Star on Saturday

Posted: October 12th, 2011

MIDDLETOWN, NY (October 14)……..The small-block Modifieds, powered by 358-cubic inch engines, will be the Saturday, October 22 headline attraction during the 50th Annual Eastern States Weekend at Orange County Fair Speedway in Middletown, New York. This year’s 35th Annual Eastern States 358 Modified Championship Presented by Arkel Motors race will be 100 laps in distance.

A star-studded lineup of top 358 Modified drivers from the entire Northeast dirt track Modified circuit will battle Orange County’s weekly competitors for the trophy and top prize money in this prestigious event.

Since its inception in 1977, the 358 Modified race has had several different formats, having been run at 50-, 75-, 100-, and 150-laps distances. The field for this year’s 100-lap race will be set through time trials and heat races, with the final starters coming from consolation races all run prior to the main event on Saturday.

Two drivers, Brett Hearn, Orange County’s all-time race winner and eight time 358 Modified point champion, and five-time winner Danny Johnson have won more than half of the previous 34 races in this annual fall classic which dates from 1977. Hearn has 13 Eastern States 358 Modified victories to his credit, while arch-rival Johnson has won this race five times. Other multi-time winners include Doug Hoffman (four victories), Kenny Tremont (three), and Jeff Heotzler (two wins).

Single Eastern States 358 Modified champions include Billy Decker, Jerry Higbie, Alan Johnson, Dickie Keiper, Mike Petruska Sr., Harry Behrent, and Anthony Ferraiuolo IV.

Saturday’s card is one of the busiest in all auto racing. In addition to the 358 Modified Championship 100 race, the Crate Sportsman division will take to the track for their heat and consolation races and the 30-lap Crate Sportsman Eastern States Championship feature race. They will be joined by the 305 Sprint Cars, also with qualifying races leading up to their 20-lap Eastern States Championship feature race. To cap off the day’s activities, the big-block Modifieds will get a last practice session during a break in the racing action.

Advance tickets for Saturday or the entire Eastern States Weekend as well as camping and parking permits are available at the Speedway Office during regular business hours, or credit card sales (Visa and MasterCard) by calling 845-342-2573. EASTERN STATES FAVORS “HOME TRACK” DRIVERS
Posted: September 30th, 2011

MIDDLETOWN, NY (September 30)……..Last October, when Tim McCreadie took the checkered flag in the 49th Annual Eastern States 200 for dirt track Modified stock cars at Orange County Fair Speedway in Middletown, New York, he became the 30th different winner of this prestigious event. McCreadie has never been a weekly competitor at Orange County, although car owner Vinnie Salerno has fielded winning cars at the track in past seasons. McCreadie and Salerno will be out to back up their 2010 victory with a win in this year’s Golden Anniversary edition, 50th Annual Eastern States 200 Presented by Arkel Motors. The Eastern States 200, a Super DIRTcar Modified Series race is the headline event of Eastern States Weekend, this year Friday-Sunday, October 21-23.

In the 48 previous running of this classic endurance race for Modifieds, 17 of the winners have been drivers who have raced weekly at Orange County at least one full season and 13 who can be considered “outside” invaders. But in terms of total wins, the Orange County contingent wins hands down, 35 to 14. And only one invading driver, Gerald Chamberlain in 1973 and 1976, has more than one Eastern States victory to his credit.

Brett Hearn, Orange County’s all-time Modified champion and race winner has to be considered among the favorites to win his ninth Eastern States 200. Hearn last won in 2006. Then there’s “The Doctor,” Danny Johnson, who ranks second in Eastern States wins with five, including the 2008 race. And among active Orange County weekly competitors, Higbie in 2009, Jeff Heotzler, the 2007 victor, Chuck McKee, the 2000 winner, and Rich Eurich, who won back in 1988, would surely like to take home another Eastern States trophy.

Of the 13 invaders who have won the Eastern States gold, in addition to McCreadie, Bobby Varin (2003 winner), Alan Johnson (1999), and Billy Decker (1998) are likely entrants in this year’s race.

The top-6 drivers in time trials will lead the field in Sunday’s race. The seventh starting slot is reserved for Rich Eurich, who won a special late season Orange County feature race. The balance of the starting field will be made up of guaranteed starters and qualified drivers from heat and consolation races.

In recent years, both Heotzler and Hearn have won the 200-lap grind from the back of the field, proving that this race can be won from any position. That’s why a banner field is expected for this year’s edition of the oldest continuously-run championship race for Modifieds---the 50th Annual Eastern States 200 Presented by Arkel Motors.

Advance tickets for Sunday’s race, or the entire Eastern States Weekend, plus camping and parking permits are available at the Speedway Office during regular business hours or through credit card sales (Visa and MasterCard) by calling 845-342-2573. Additional information can be found at the official Orange County Fair Speedway website,www.orangecountyfairspeedway.net.

Also on Saturday, the Crate Sportsman and 305 Sprint Cars will be in action with qualifying and feature races---30 laps for the Crate Sportsman and a 20-lap main for the 305 Sprint Cars.

On Sunday, following the morning fan-oriented Pit Party, there are last chance consolation races for the Modifieds, a Northeast Vintage Modified championship race, and a 30-lap Pro Stock feature. These preliminaries lead up to the 50th Annual Eastern States 200 Modified Championship race.

Tim McCreadie, a second generation driver whose father has also won the Eastern States 200, is the race’s defending champion. Brett Hearn, Orange County’s all-time winner and point champion, is the all-time Eastern States 200 titlist with eight victories, the last in 2006.

CHAMPION'S NIGHT RECAP
Posted: September 3rd, 2011

By FRANK CATIZONE

MIDDLETOWN – Veteran DIRTcar Modified drivers Tim Hindley and Tommy Meier highlighted an intense evening of racing last Saturday night as the Orange County Fair Speedway crowned its 2011 track champions.

Hindley, who has struggled throughout the racing campaign, picked up his first victory as he dominated a 25-car field in the DIRTcar Modified 30-lap feature. Meier finished seventh in the event to lock up the second title of his OCFS career.

Hindley, after starting 13th, was hardly unlucky during this run to his eighth career OCFS victory as he worked quickly towards the front with some powerful maneuvers on the outside groove. The “Monticello Maniac’’ raced among the top five by the 10th lap as he chased leader Dave Werber, Jesse Kline, Michael Storms and Craig Mitchell.

Werber, who was seeking his first OCFS victory in exactly six years, led from the opening green as he received challenges from both Mitchell and Kline during the first half of the race. An accident involving Kline and Storms with 15 laps completed shook up the top five, and provided Hindley with the break he needed.

Storms, after colliding with Kline off the fourth turn, came to a rest in the first turn after making contact with the homestretch wall. Hindley just missed the incident and stood in fourth place for the restart behind Werber, Kline and Mitchell.

Another accident involving Jackie Brown Jr., Donnie Elliott, Jeremy Markle and Mike Ruggiero in the second turn slowed action with 16 laps down. Meier was forced to pit with a right rear tire from the incident and had to start from the rear.

Hindley inherited second place a lap later when Kline dropped out and blasted past Werber with an outside pass between the third and fourth turns to grab first place on the 19th circuit. It was all Hindley from that point on as he picked up his first OCFS win since Aug. 7, 2010.

“It feels good to finally get one this season,’’ said Hindley. “We’ve struggled finding the right set up for this car after an early-season crash, but the guys stood right behind me and I think we’ve finally hit on something.’’

Hindley was part of a tremendous first-turn crash on April 30 when Randy Sherlock’s car flipped and landed upside down.

“We’ve been searching for the answers with this car since that crash,’’ said Hindley. “I went over everything, but just couldn’t figure out what was wrong. Finally, we realized the rear end was out of whack and we straightened it out. That’s really made a difference and the car has handled so much better.’’

Hindley also said they were using their Syracuse motor en route to the win. However, they’re planning to skip Super DIRT Week this year.

“That gives us a pleasant dilemma because we have two good motors available for Eastern States,’’ said Hindley. “But I have to decide which one better suits this car the way we have it set up.’’

Higbie, who was seeking his third straight track championship, turned in a second-place performance, but fell five points shy as Meier (691-686) took his first crown since 2004. Meier was forced to pit twice during the race.

Werber settled for a third-place performance with Mitchell, Clinton Mills, Bob McGannon, Meier, Bill VanInwegen Jr., Chris Shultz and Markle rounding out the top 10.

The battle for DIRTcar Sportsman supremacy had its own twists and turns as Gary Edwards Jr. locked up his first career title by just three points over Shane Jablonka (861).

Jablonka was awarded his second straight victory this season when apparent winner Ken Boniface Jr. was light over the scales during the post-race weigh-in. But Edwards, whose only win came during the season-opener on April 9, finished second to capture the banner with 864 points.

Reigning champion Brian Krummel was in a good position to defend his title as raced ahead of both Edwards and Jablonka past the halfway mark of the 20-lap feature. But Krummel, who entered the night tied with Edwards in first place with 803 points, was forced to the rear following a first-turn accident with 12 laps down. He was forced to the pits two laps later.

That opened the door for Edwards as he kept Jablonka within sight to earn the championship. John Lodini was awarded third place following Boniface’s disqualification with Bobby Hentschel and Jason Roe following.

John Velde grabbed his second victory of the season in the Pro Stock 15-lap main event with Ron Nuzzaro Jr., Jay Pepin, Russ Nuzzaro and Paul Maiolo following.

Velde, who picked up his other 2011 win on July 2, grabbed first place on the third lap and was never seriously challenged after that. Mike Dutka, who was forced out three laps from the finish, had already locked up the divisional title.

The Pure Stock title went right down to the last lap of the season as Charles Donald won the 15-lap feature and also secured his first career championship.

Donald and defending titlist Emerson Cargain Sr, who entered the evening tied for first place, locked horns since the fifth lap and swapped the lead several times en route to the checkered flag. However, they made contact while racing between the third and fourth turns with 14 laps completed.

Donald was able to grab the lead during the racing incident and Cargain was forced to the rear. That paved the way for Donald to earn the win over Matt Burke, Stephen Kammer, Kevin Skellly and John Dore.

ORANGE COUNTY FAIR SPEEDWAY POINT CHAMPIONS TO BE CROWNED SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 3 - Point battles close in all but one division
Posted: August 28th, 2011

MIDDLETOWN, NY (August 26)……..When New York Yankee catcher Yogi Berra said, “It ain’t over ‘til it’s over,” truer words were never spoken. That’s exactly the case in three of Orange County Fair Speedway’s weekly racing divisions. With the season-long point championships to be decided Saturday, September 3, drivers competing in the Modified, Sportsman, and Street Stock ranks are locked in tight point battles with the outcomes in doubt until each division’s final checkered flag. Only in the Pro Stock class does one driver, Mike Dutka, have a decisive edge over his nearest rival, Tom Vigh.

The headline Modified division title will go to one of two previous winners of the prestigious crown. Tommy Meier, the 2004 titlist, tops the list, but defending champion Jerry Higbie is still in the running. Both veteran drivers have distanced themselves from everyone else in the division.

The Sportsman division crown will be decided among three drivers, 2010 champion Brian Krummel, and challengers Gary Edwards Jr. and Shane Jablonka. This trio of racers has a comfortable lead over the rest of the Sportsman competitors. This one won’t be decided until the last lap of the 20-lap Sportsman feature race.

Finally, there’s the torrid battle between Charles Donald and cagey veteran and 2010 Street Stock champion Emerson Cargain Sr. The Street Stock point chase is so close that a single finishing position difference may determine who wins the title.

The Orange County Kids Club also has activities planned for the youngsters. And for fun and bragging rights, the annual Officials Race is part of the program.

Championship Night on Labor Day Weekend is sponsored by Bill Rumsey’s WLR Construction Company.

Admission prices for the September 3 race meet remain at $14 adults, $12 seniors, and free for children 12 and under. The exceptionally full night of racing begins promptly at 6:30 pm.

Advance ticket sales for the September 10 non-point races, the September 17 Eve of Destruction, the October 21-23 50th Annual Eastern States Weekend, and track information are available at the Orange County website, www.orangecountyfairspeedway.net, or from the Track Office. Week 20 Recap
Posted: August 20th, 2011

By FRANK CATIZONE
MIDDLETOWN, N.Y. – John Lieto has been down on power since the second week of racing at the Orange County Fair Speedway this season.

That’s because Lieto blew his engine while leading the DIRTcar Modified feature on April 30 and the big block was sent to builder Dan Bedell for repair.

Lieto, who has struggled throughout the 2011 campaign, received a much needed boost from his car owner, Ken Hermance, prior to last Saturday night’s racing program.

Hermance finally got the engine back from Bedell and it provided Lieto with the extra horsepower needed to carry him to his first victory of the 2011 campaign in the 30-lap main event.

“It made a world of difference,’’ said Lieto. “This is our best engine and we just got it back after I blew it up earlier in the year. The block cracked and it bled all of the coolant out. But there was no indication that the engine was getting hot. I would have pulled it in if I knew there was a problem.’’

Lieto, who won his qualifying race, started on the pole and never trailed throughout the event as he registered his second career OCFS victory. However, the 45-year-old Mt. Kisco driver knew the slightest mistake on his part could have cost him a win.

“This was almost exactly to the day from my first Modified win here,’’ said Lieto, who won at OCFS on Aug. 21 last season. “I just hit my marks on the track and was able to run a consistent line. But I knew I had to because Gary Tomkins was right behind me. He’s one of the best in the business.’’

Tomkins, who is still seeking his first OCFS win this season, passed teammate Cliff Ehrman for second place on the fifth lap. But the Clifton Springs driver was never able to reel in Lieto despite three early caution periods. Lieto was able to build his lead up after each restart and eventually won by 1.524 seconds when starter Jerry Enright waved the checkered flags.

“I want to thank my car owner Ken Hermance and all the guys on our crew,’’ said Lieto. “There’s no way I would be standing here right now without all of their hard work. The car was just perfect tonight and that engine really made the difference. We had no tire wear and there we no problems to speak of. I couldn’t be happier.’’

Ehrman finished in third place with Mike Kolka, Tim Hindley, Jeremy Markle, Steve Dodd, Chris Whitehead, Jackie Brown Jr. and Tommy Meier rounding out the top 10. Meier, the division’s points leader, was forced to pit twice during the race.
Reigning track champion Jerry Higbie won the Modified Elimination race and received $500 from Martine’s. Higbie is still seeking his first feature win of 2011.

Second-generation driver Shane Jablonka visited victory lane for the first time in more than a year as he captured the DIRTcar Sportsman 20-lap feature on the night his father Stan was making his 2011 debut.

Shane Jablonka, after starting 10th in the 24-car field, utilized an inside pass off the third turn to grab the lead away from Danny Cronk on the 12th lap just before Gary Edwards Jr. halted action with a second-turn caution. Cronk began fading and dropped out of the event a lap later.

Shane Jablonka, who also won his qualifying heat, continued to pace the field when racing resumed and John Ferrier was quickly making his presence known. Ferrier slipped into second place past Frank Venezia on the 14th lap, but was never able to mount a challenge for the lead.

Ferrier settled for second place with Brian Krummel, Jimmy Spellmon and Venezia rounding out the top five. Stan Jablonka, who ranks in a third-place tie with Rick Mill with 21 triumphs apiece on OCFS’s all-time Sportsman winner’s list, finished 10th in his return.

Emerson Cargain Jr., after starting on the pole, fought off the late challenges provided by Mike Dutka to score his first victory of the season in the Pro Stock 15-lap feature.

However, the road to his second OCFS career triumph wasn’t easy. Emerson Cargain Jr. raced in third place for most of the event behind leader Tommy Vigh Jr. and Dutka. But Vigh began slowing on the 11th lap and Dutka got out of shape, allowing Emerson Cargain Jr. to sneak into first place.
Emerson Cargain Jr. was then able to hold off Dutka to the finish with Joel Murns Jr., Peter VanNoordt and Torin Betterton following.

Kevin Skelly, who began this season racing on the asphalt at Bethel Woods Speedway in Sullivan County, has certainly made a quick adjustment to the hard clay as he grabbed his second straight triumph in the Street Stock 12-lap feature.

Skelly, who won here on July 30, wrestled the lead away from Charles Donald between the third and fourth turns on the ninth lap and never looked back as he finished ahead of Donald, Stephen Kammer, Emerson Cargain Sr. and Stan Vishinski Sr.

Ron Constable, who started outside pole, led the 15-car field for the first three laps before Donald took command at the starter’s stand to complete four laps. Donald remained in front until Skelly executed his race-winning move.

Ray See Jr. is really starting to enjoy the five-eighths mile, hard clay oval at OCFS as he grabbed his second straight victory in the Northeast Vintage Modified 12-lap feature race.

The touring racing club was making its third visit of the season and See was able to earn his third career OCFS win against an 11-car field. However, See was aided by the mechanical woes of Jake Schlagel, who popped out of gear twice during the event.

Schlagel stormed out in front on the first lap and appeared to have the field covered before slowing down in the fourth turn on the third circuit. Richie Padgett inherited first place and Schlagel was forced to the rear.

See passed Padgett on the restart and began sailing well out in front. Schlagel, meanwhile, after getting his car back in gear, started moving his way back towards the front and eventually finished second. He was followed by Drew Evanyte, Mike Murphy and Stan Woyt.

DIRTcar Modified Feature Finish, 30 Laps: 1. John Lieto, 2. Gary Tomkins, 3. Cliff Ehrman, 4. Mike Kolka, 5. Tim Hindley, 6. Jeremy Markle, 7. Steve Dodd, 8. Chris Whitehead, 9. Jackie Brown Jr., 10. ORANGE COUNTY FAIR SPEEDWAY DRIVERS BATTLE FOR POINTS AS SEASON WINDS DOWN
Posted: August 12th, 2011

MIDDLETOWN, NY (August 12)……..When the exhaust fumes settle from Saturday’s race meet at Orange County Fair Speedway in Middletown, New York, there will be just three more weeks of competition before the track point champions are crowned. For drivers in each of the speedway’s four stock car divisions this makes the Saturday, August 20 racing program even more important as point championships include trophies, cash bonuses, and all-important bragging rights will be decided.

All four racing divisions---Modifieds, Sportsman, Pro Stock, and Street Stock---will be in action on the 20th, with a full program of qualifying and feature races. And for the youngsters, the Orange County Kids Club has activities planned. Holiday Inn of Middletown and Sparta Trucking are the night’s sponsors.

In the headline Modified division, there’s a close point battle between current champion Jerry Higbie and 2004 titlist Tommy Meier. Higbie and Meier have a significant point edge over third-place Jackie Brown Jr., so it appears these two veteran campaigners will fight it out for the Modified championship.

In Sportsman competition, Gary Edwards Jr. currently holds the top spot, but defending champion Brian Krummel is lurking only a few points behind, with Shane Jablonka further back in third.

Unless he misses the next three races, 2008 point champion Mike Dutka looks like a shoo-in for his second Pro Stock crown, although second-place Tommy Vigh has not been eliminated from the hunt.

The closest point battle is in the Street Stock division, where veteran driver Emerson Cargain Sr. is locked in a tight race with Charles Donald. Only a few points separate the top-two drivers and in the Street Stock division, anything can happen…and usually does. This championship won’t be decided until the checkered flag waves on the final point night.

Admission prices for the August 20 race meet remain at $14 adults, $12 seniors, and free for children 12 and under. The exceptionally full night of racing begins promptly at 6:30 pm.

Advance ticket sales for all remaining 2011 races, including the October 21-23 50th Annual Eastern States Weekend, and track information are available at the Orange County website, www.orangecountyfairspeedway.net, or from the Track Office. Call 845-342-2573 weekdays during business hours.

July 16th Recap
Posted: July 18th, 2011

By FRANK CATIZONE

MIDDLETOWN, N.Y. – Bob McGannon is a true believer in fate.

So much so that McGannon feels a stronger force helped him find the needed power to secure his first career victory last Saturday night in the DIRTcar Modified 30-lap feature at the Orange County Fair Speedway.

McGannon, who jumped right into Modified competition in 2006 after a successful Pro Stock career, was very emotional in victory lane during his post-race interview with assistant track announcer Joel Murns Jr.

“This one’s for you dad,’’ said McGannon, whose father John passed away exactly five years ago on July 16. “I believe things happen for a reason. Dad was my biggest fan and I feel he might have helped me across the finish line first tonight.’’

McGannon, who won 23 times during his OCFS Pro Stock career, enjoyed success in full-fender competition throughout the northeast dirt-track circuit. But he’s been saddled with some tough luck during his five-year Modified career.

McGannon lost a piston in his motor after qualifying for the feature on July 9 and had to have it shipped to Precision Engine in Middletown.

“I burned up a piston,’’ explained McGannon, “but Bob Wendland got it back together and we had the engine back on Thursday. “We had the engine back in the car and had it all scaled by 9:30 Thursday night.
“My guys really busted it getting the car ready and I can’t thank them enough for all of their hard work. There’s no way I could have done this without their help.’’

But McGannon, who started third in the 25-car field, hardly looked to have a winning car during the race’s early stages. Donnie Wilson, who was also looking for his first OCFS Modified win, proved dominant after starting outside pole. The second-generation driver led for the first 19 laps with his father Billy Wilson trailing in second place.

However, Craig Mitchell came up with a flat tire to force the race’s only caution. The top five never changed during the first 19 laps and McGannon was running in third place.

McGannon found an opening under Billy Wilson to grab second place following the restart and then began his charge towards Donnie Wilson. McGannon caught up to Donnie Wilson by the 23rd lap as the two drivers crossed the finish line dead even.

McGannon and Donnie Wilson continued to battle for first place until McGannon finally got the upper hand between the first and second turns on the 25th lap. McGannon then increased his lead going down the backstretch and went on to take the checkered flag from OCFS starter Jerry Enright by a 1.495-second margin over Donnie Wilson.

“I was determined to win this race tonight,’’ said McGannon. “My father was always there for me no matter where I raced. This win is for him.’’

Billy Wilson held on to place third with Chris Whitehead, Jerry Higbie, Mike Ruggiero, Michael Storms, Bill VanInwegen Jr., Tim Hindley and Tommy Meier rounding out the top 10. Higbie, who experienced mechanical problems during hot laps, was driving Ruggiero’s No. 4R Modified.

In DIRTcar Sportsman action, second-generation driver Ken Boniface Jr. joined his father Ken Sr. as an OCFS feature winner by claiming the first victory of his racing career in the 20-lap main event.

Ken Boniface Jr., who was driving his brother Tyler’s car for the evening, bolted ahead of Anthony Perrego at the drop of the initial green flag and remained in first place the entire distance as the race ran caution-free.

Perrego, who won at Accord Speedway last Friday night, challenged Ken Boniface Jr. several times during the event, but couldn’t find the right line to grab the lead. Gary Edwards Jr. followed in third place with Brian Krummel and Andrew Reeves rounding out the top five.

Ken Boniface Sr., who won a track title at OCFS in 1990, claimed 15 features during his career from 1988-94. He ranks in a sixth-place time with Mike Ruggiero on the track’s all-time Sportsman’s winner’s list.

Tommy Vigh Jr. picked up his second victory of 2011 in a fierce Pro Stock 15-lap feature with Mike Dutka right on his bumper at the checkered flag.

A scramble on a seventh-lap restart on the homestretch left Dutka around and several of the cars behind him involved in the mishap. Vigh appeared to cause the accident when he steered into Dutka’s front left corner panel following the restart.

But track officials deemed the incident was a racing accident and Vigh remained in the lead. Dutka, a three-time winner this season, came all the back from the rear to challenge Vigh during the closing laps.
Jay Pepin followed in third place with Emerson Cargain Jr. and Paul Maiolo rounding out the top five.

In Street Stock action, Emerson Cargain Sr. returned to his winning ways as he grabbed his third victory this season in the 15-lap main event.

Emerson Cargain Sr., who hasn’t visited victory lane since May 14, grabbed the lead away from Kurt Hundeland following a third-lap restart and never looked back as he finished well ahead of Stephen Kammer, John Dore, Ron Constable and Stan Vishinski Sr.

Hundeland, who later dropped out with engine problems, led for the first two laps before Matt Burke forced a caution when his car was leaking fluid on the track. Emerson Cargain Sr. overpowered Hundeland on the restart and never trailed again.

The race was cautioned for the last time with three laps completed when Charles Donald and Dore made contact while racing off the fourth turn. Donald’s car shot inside and collided with one of the jersey barriers on the homestretch. Donald wasn’t injured, but his car received excessive damage and was cradled to the pits.

July 9th Recap

By FRANK CATIZONE

MIDDLETOWN, N.Y. – Donnie Elliott and his family have been racing fixtures at the Orange County Fair Speedway for decades.

In fact, Elliott, a second-generation driver, only has to look past the first turn fence to see his automobile repair shop standing on Wisner Avenue.

OCFS has been home to Elliott for many reasons, and last Saturday night, the 37-year-old Middletown driver experienced the racing thrill of his lifetime.

Elliott, after starting on the pole, took advantage of an engine provided by Roger Humeston and the misfortune of fellow competitor Kirk Horton to score his first big block career victory in the DIRTcar Modified 30-lap feature.

“I’m on cloud nine right now,’’ said Elliott. “This is just unbelievable and is just fantastic. I just got off the phone with my good buddy Danny Creeden and he won up at Five Mile Point tonight. What a great night this has been.’’

It was a great night for Elliott and Humeston, who owns the big block Modified that Creeden races. Humeston lent his back-up motor to Elliott for the evening and the Bedell-bullt big block provided the power he needed to reach victory lane.

“This wouldn’t have been possible without the help of Roger Humeston from RJH Construction,’’ said Elliott. “I lost my engine and he lent me this one. I can’t thank him enough for his generosity.

“My crew worked extra hard all week getting this car ready to race tonight and they deserve all the thanks in the world. This wouldn’t have been possible without all of their hard work. I also want to thank Jerry Higbie for all of his help. I want to thank my wife and kids for all of their support.’’

But Elliott, who last reached victory lane at OCFS on June 4, 2005 with his fourth career 358 Modified victory, appeared to only have a second-place car during the early stages of the event. Horton was enjoying a comfortable lead and was seeking his first win of the 2011 campaign.

However, just after taking the halfway sign from OCFS starter Jerry Enright, Horton’s car slowed on the backstretch and he was forced out of competition with engine problems. That handed the lead over to Elliott, who remained there the rest of the way.

But Elliott had no easy ride to victory lane as Chris Shultz made things interesting on more than one occasion. Shultz was flying on the outside groove and pulled alongside Elliott between the third and fourth turns.

“But that was his mistake,’’ said Elliott. “Chris (Shultz) showed me his nose and I changed the line I was racing to block the outside. I just moved up a little bit.’’

The higher line kept Shultz behind during the closing laps and enabled Elliott to experience a lifetime dream as he earned Modified victory No. 1 ahead of Shultz, Craig Mitchell, Jackie Brown Jr., Higbie, Tommy Meier, Richie Eurich, Gary Tomkins, Mike Ruggiero and Chris Whitehead.

“My father (Don) brought us here when he raced.’’ said Elliott. “That’s how it all started for us at Orange County. He’s been a little sick lately, but still stopped by this morning with some fuel. This is a special win and I want to dedicate it to him.’’

Jimmy Spellmon steered clear of a massive backstretch pile-up before a lap was scored and then went on to capture his first victory of the season in the DIRTcar Sportsman 20-lap feature.

Spellmon, after starting third in the 25-car field, was fortunate to slip past the wreck started when Rich Eggers got out of shape off the second turn that started the field of cars behind him to pile into each other. There were 14 competitors involved in the accident and 10 were forced out of action – including top drivers Sammy Piazza, John Ferrier, Darrell Ford and Anthony Perrego.

Matt Hitchcock, who won at both OCFS and Accord Speedway a week ago, was also involved and forced to the pits as the race was under red conditions. But Hitchcock was able to continue when racing resumed and eventually finished in seventh place.

Spellmon, who picked up his first career win here on May 9, 2009, vaulted into first place and never looked back as he led Shane Jablonka across the finish line. Frank Venzia earned a third-place performance with Brian Krummel and Gary Edwards Jr. following.

Ron Nuzzaro Jr., who reached victory lane three times during the 2010 racing season, returned to his winning ways in Pro Stock action as he claimed his fourth career triumph in the 15-lap feature.

Nuzzaro, after starting third in the 12-car field, overpowered Troy Arnold on a fourth-lap retart and never faltered as he finished ahead of Arnold, Paul Maiolo, Tommy Vigh Jr. and Mike Dutka.

Arnold led the first three laps before Dutka forced the race’s only caution with a left rear flat. Dutka charged from the rear to still earn a top-five finish.

Tom Shortway, who started outside pole, jumped into first place when the green flag dropped and never looked back as he scored his first victory of 2011 in the Street Stock 15-lap main event.

Shortway’s only pause to his initial checkered flag this season came when Tyler Thissen forced a caution with a four-turn mishap with 14 laps completed. Shortway held off Stan Vishinski Sr. to the finish with Matt Burke, John Dore and Charles Donald following.

The Northeast Vintage Modified touring club made their second OCFS appearance of the season and Ray See Jr. drove home with a victory in the 15-lap feature. He was followed by Rob Casti, Jim Halpin, OCFS announcer Tim Pitts and Burt Irwin Jr.

See, taking full advantage of the four-barrel carburetor under the hood of his modified racer, wrestled the lead away from Pitts on the second lap and then ran off to an impressive win.

Irwin was credited with a Vintage Sportsman victory in the race as his car was competing with a two-barrel carburetor.

July 2nd Recap
Posted: July 5th, 2011

By FRANK CATIZONE
MIDDLETOWN, N.Y. – Richie Eurich has stood in victory lane many times during his highly successful racing career at the Orange County Fair Speedway.

But Eurich had a special gleam about him last Saturday night following his dominating performance in the DIRTcar Modified 30-lap main event. The legendary Warwick driver knew his recent win was special.

“I got Will Cagle with this one,’’ said Eurich to OCFS announcer Tim Pitts, who was conducting the post-race interview.

Yes, the “Legendary’’ Richie Eurich, as announced so many times by Pitts, joined Cagle for third place on OCFS’s all-time Modified winner’s list with his 47th career triumph. Only Brett Hearn (171) and Frankie Schneider (58) have more victories since records were kept starting in 1948.

Eurich, a three-time Modified track champion, recorded his first win here on June 12, 1971. He has collected at least one victory in 27 different seasons and became the ninth driver in 2011 to collect a victory.

Eurich, who started outside pole, got the jump on Donnie Elliott Jr. when OCFS starter waved the initial green flag and was never challenged during the event. The Johnson driver built big leads following each restart and finished more than two seconds ahead of John Lieto.

But Eurich said he’s been struggling throughout the season to find a winning combination for his Modfied.

“It hasn’t been easy,’’ said Eurich. “We’ve been searching…searching…searching…for a set-up. I think my crew chief (Dave Eurich) may have finally hit on something. This is the best the car has been all season long.

“But we had a good starting position and that also made a big difference. We’ll have to see how we’ll do when we have to start in the back.’’

Lieto, who inherited second place when Elliott was forced to pit with a flat tire, was no match for Eurich as he drifted off the winning pace with each passing lap. In fact, the top five or six competitors remained in single file for most of the event.

The most interesting racing was contested further back in the 25-car field as Jerry Higbie and Tommy Meier waged a competitive battle for position. Higbie finished just ahead of Meier in seventh place when the checkered flag flew.

Jackie Brown Jr., who in enjoying the best season of his OCFS career, finished in third place with Tim Hindley, Jesse Kline and Steve Dodd following.

Matt Hitchcock enjoyed the best weekend of his racing career as he captured the DIRTcar Sportsman 20-lap feature and the one-on-one, elimination race as well.

Hitchcock, who also won a Spec Sportsman race at Accord Speedway last Friday night, grabbed first place on the 17th lap when Tim Paul drifted too high coming off the fourth turn. Hitchcock then went on to finish ahead of Shane Jablonka, Sammy Piazza, Gary Edwards Jr, and Brian Krummel.

Paul, who was seeking his first career win, led from the start and held off several challenges provided by Hitchcock. But his bid ended four laps from the finish.

John Velde grabbed his first victory of the season in the Pro Stock 15-lap feature as he finished ahead of Mike Dutka, Tommy Vigh Jr., Joel Murns Jr. and Ron Nuzzaro Jr.

Velde, who led the entire race, held off the late-race challenge provided by Dutka, who paces the division with three wins in 2011.

Stephen Kammer utilized some power late in the race to grab his second victory this season in the 15-lap Street Stock feature.

Kammer, after starting deep in the field, charged from the back on the outside groove and passed both Ron Constable and Charles Donald for first place on the 13th lap. He then held on to outrace Constable, Donald, Stan Vishinski Sr. and Matt Burke.

DIRTcar Modified Feature Finish, 30 Laps: 1. Richie Eurich, 2. John Lieto, 3. Jackie Brown Jr., 4. Tim Hindley, 5. Jesse Kline, 6. Steve Dodd, 7. Jerry Higbie, 8. Tommy Meier, 9. Jeremy Markle, 10. June 25th Recap
Posted: June 27th, 2011

By FRANK CATIZONE

MIDDLETOWN, N.Y. – Chuck McKee is only racing a limited schedule this season.

But that didn’t stop the “Middletown Missile’’ from carving another notch in his victory belt last Saturday night at the Orange County Fair Speedway.

McKee, making only his fifth appearance of the 2011 racing campaign, held off the challenges provided by Tommy Meier throughout the race to capture the DIRTcar Modified 30-lap feature event. It was McKee’s 28th career OCFS triumph and a win he dedicated to car owner Bob Perino during the post-race festivities.

“This goes out to Mr. Perino,’’ said McKee. “He has taken a little sick. This one (victory) is for him. He’s the main ingredient of this race team and he’s the one that makes things happen. This wouldn’t be possible if not for Mr. Perino and his son Robbie. Thanks so much for everything.’’

McKee, after starting fourth in the 26-car field, wasted little time working towards the front. He stood in second place behind leader Kirk Horton before a lap was scored and passed Horton for the top spot while racing off the second turn on the third circuit around the five-eighths mile, hard clay oval.

Meier, meanwhile, who has displayed dominance on the outside groove throughout the campaign, was quickly racing forwards the front. Meier, who started 11th, broke the top five by the sixth lap, and passed both Jackie Brown Jr. and Mike Kolka a lap later to grab third place.

Meier moved ahead of Horton for second place by the eighth lap, but had a lot of distance to make up to catch McKee, who was sailing way out in front. But Meier was able to gain ground each lap on McKee, who appeared to have come up with handling difficulties.

McKee was able to drive the outside groove with great success early on, but his line moved down as the race progressed.

“I don’t know what happened there,’’ said McKee, “but the car was really getting loose towards the end of the race. I had a real hard time keeping it straight on the top of the track. I might have tightened it up too much.’’

Still, McKee was able to maintain his edge as lapped traffic approached and Meier was in hot pursuit. Richie Eurich brought action to a halt when he hit the first-turn wall with 24 laps completed and his car suffered extensive front end damage.

Meier tried passing McKee to both the inside and outside lanes when racing resumed, but he just couldn’t muster enough momentum to make a pass. He did get a nose under McKee once, but that might have cost him a chance at a takeover.

“That was the mistake he made,’’ said McKee. “I saw his nose once on the inside in the fourth turn and I just knew what I had to do after that. Tommy has really been coming on and has found something on the outside. But I knew there was nothing left on the top.’’

Meier, who has finished among the leaders consistently all season, grabbed a $1,000 bonus for winning the two-race, King of the Track Series with 104 points. Jerry Higbie was second with 92.

“We’ll get one sooner or later,’’ said Meier, who is still looking for his first win of 2011. “Maybe’ we’ll get it next week. This car has performed well all season and we’ve definitely found a good set-up on the top.

“But a lot of that goes to the track preparation. They’re working hard every week getting this surface in order and it keeps getting better. Vinnie and his guys deserve a lot of credit.’’

Jeremy Markle, who started 14th, made a strong charge to finish in third place with Brown, Steve Dodd, Tim Hindley, Billy Wilson, John Lieto, Craig Mitchell and Mike Ruggiero rounding out the top 10.

In DIRTcar Sportsman action, John Lodini led the entire 20-lap distance from his starting pole position en route to his first career victory.

Lodini, who also captured his qualifying heat, was never seriously challenged throughout the race as he finished ahead of Matt Janiak, Sammy Piazza, Shane Jablonka and Brian Krummel.

However, there was some real competitive racing behind Lodini as several drivers made strong charges to finish among the top 10 when starter Jerry Enright displayed the checkered flag. Krummel advanced 11 spots from his 16th starting position and Jablonka picked up 10 spots from 14th.

Mike Dutka continued his quest towards another track championship as he registered his third win this season in the Pro Stock 15-lap feature.

Dutka, the 2008 OCFS titlist, took over first place on the 10th lap when Emerson Cargain Jr. drifted high while racing off the fourth turn. Dutka darted past Cargain to the inside while racing down the homestretch and then went on to score his ninth career victory.

Cargain, who led the first seven laps, and Rob Yetman crossed the finish line dead even at the halfway mark to complete eight laps. However, Yetman nosed ahead with an inside pass entering the first turn and appeared to have gained control of the event. But Yetman suddenly dropped off the pace and was forced to retire.

Cargain inherited the lead again, but lost it a lap later to Dutka. Cargain wound up finishing second with Tommy Vigh Jr., Russ Nuzzaro and Ron Nuzzaro Jr. rounding out the top five.

Matt Burke picked up his third win this season in a wild 15-lap feature for the Street Stock drivers as Emerson Cargain Sr., Charles Donald, C.J. Hurtak and Kurt Hundeland rounded out the top five.

Burke, who started eighth in the 11-car field, inherited first place on the eighth lap when leader Stephen Kammer spun on the backstretch. Burke assumed the point in the race and Emerson Cargain Sr. took over second place – setting up what was expected to be a mad dash to the finish.

But Burke kept Emerson Cargain Sr. in check to the finish to become the division’s top winner this season behind his third trip to victory lane.

June 18th Recap
Posted: June 18th, 2011

By FRANK CATIZONE

MIDDLETOWN, N.Y. – The emergence of young Modified driver Michael Storms could finally be starting to take shape.

Storms, in the midst of his fourth Modified campaign, joined forces with car owners Robbie and Randy Sherlock shortly before the 2011 season began. Thus far, the union has been a prosperous one.

Storms, after starting sixth in a 26-car field, became the division’s first multiple winner as he displayed some awesome power to capture the caution-free, DIRTcar Modified 30-lap feature last Saturday night at the Orange County Fair Speedway.

Storms, who picked up a win at the track on May 7, is off to the best start of his Modified career.

“This couldn’t have come at a better time,’’ said Storms. “It’s good to get a win just before the Big Show III comes in here on Tuesday (June 21). I’m looking forward to racing against all of those guys that compete on the DIRTcar circuit. They’re some real good drivers and getting this win now is a real shot in the arm for us.’’

Storms, who started in the front row en route to his initial win of 2011, said his second victory of the season was more rewarding.

“It’s more meaningful because I earned it,’’ said the 23-year-old Wantage, N.J., driver. “Anyone can start up front at Orange County and get a victory. Yeah, starting sixth wasn’t that far back, but we had to pass some cars to get to the front. This just wasn’t handed to me.’’

But Storms wasted no time showing his competition that he was going to be a strong contender on this night. “Kid Lightning’’ roared into fourth place at the drop of the green and stood in third place behind leader Bill VanInwegen Jr. and Bob McGannon by the fifth circuit.

Storms, after several passing attempts, finally drove his way around McGannon on the 13th lap and then set his sights on VanInwegen as the midway point of the race was approaching. Storms drove around VanInwegen while racing off the second turn on the 16th lap and then began building a nice cushion over the rest of the field.

“My car worked very well on the outside between the first and second turns,’’ said Storms, “but it’s not like you could go to the top and pass cars at will. You really had to work at it and I was able to get a little bit of an edge at that point.

“They’re doing a good job with the track and its getting a little better on the outside. But this car the Sherlocks have provided me with is just awesome and I can’t thank them enough for this opportunity. We just have to keep getting better and I think we will as the season goes on. This is the first time I’ve ever won two Modified races in one season.’’

But Storms had to work hard for the victory as Jerry Higbie was cutting into his advantage as the latter stages of the race approached. Storms got caught behind some lapped traffic during his winning drive and Higbie took advantage of the opportunity.

“They don’t display the move-over flag here, so the lapped cars don’t know the leaders are approaching,’’ said Storms. “But I knew what was going on because the guys were giving me hand signals from the pits. I knew someone was coming. I just concentrated on racing my line and knew I had an awesome car to drive. This just feels great.’’

Higbie closed the gap to 0.147 seconds at the finish, but had to settle for a second-place showing. He was followed by VanInwegen, McGannon, Tommy Meier, Craig Mitchell, Jesse Kline, Tim Hindley, Donnie Wilson and Jackie Brown Jr.

In DIRTcar Sportsman action, Eddie Burgess started on the outside pole and led the entire 20-lap distance to capture his first victory of the season over R.J. Smykla, Frank Venezia, Andrew Reeves and Jimmy Spellmon.

Burgess, who notched his third career OCFS win, was never challenged throughout the race as the top five never changed for the first 14 laps. That’s when fourth-running Darrell Ford was forced to the pits with mechanical problems.

Reeves inherited fourth place when Ford retired and Spellmon took over fifth just before Sammy Piazza brought out the race’s only caution with an incident in the second turn. Piazza was battling for position with Shane Jablonka when the drivers’ cars made contact and Piazza spun out.

Burgess assumed command once again when racing resumed and never looked back to checkered flag for his first OCFS triumph since May 22, 2010.

Torin Betterton grabbed his first career victory in the Pro Stock 20-lap feature as he scored a narrow win over Tommy Vigh Jr.

Betterton, who started outside pole in the 14-car field, got the jump on Joel Murns Jr. and led the first two laps when Troy Arnold slowed action after making contact with the second turn wall. The race was cautioned again a lap later when Arnold’s car slowed on the first-turn apron and needed assistance into the pits.

Betterton jumped right back in front when racing resumed and Vigh remained close behind. The two drivers completed the eighth lap nearly dead even before Betterton nosed ahead while racing between the first and second turns.

Betterton maintained his small cushion over Vigh the rest of the way as Mike Dutka, Jay Pepin and John Velde completed the top five.

The Street Stock feature turned out to be a wild affair as Stephen Kammer scored his first career win ahead of Charles Donald, Kurt Hundeland, Matt Burke and Ron Constable in the 15-lap event.

Kammer, who started 10th in the 11-car field, took advantage of several cautions early in the race to move into second place behind leader Emerson Cargain Sr. after just five laps were completed. Cargain, the track’s reigning champion, looked well en route to another triumph when racing resumed.

But C.J. Hurtak forced another caution when his car spun in the first turn with nine laps down. Cargain’s street stock was pushed to the pits during the caution and Kammer inherited first place. Kammer remained in front to the finish.

June 4th Recap
Posted: June 6th, 2011

By FRANK CATIZONE
MIDDLETOWN, N.Y. – Chris Whitehead punched his ticket into one of the richest Super DIRTcar Modified Series races of the season last Saturday night at the Orange County Fair Speedway.

Because Whitehead, behind his first OCFS victory of 2011 in the DIRTcar Modified 30-lapper, earned a guaranteed starting spot for August 25’s “Mr. DIRT Track USA 100’’ at Lebanon Valley Speedway in upstate West Lebanon. The race offers $17,500 to the winner.

“Yeah, we’ll be going now,’’ said Whitehead, after securing his third OCFS career Modified victory. “I really didn’t give it much of a thought before this because you need a lot of motor to race on that track. But I like racing at Lebanon Valley. We’ll give it a shot since we got the guaranteed starting spot.’’

Whitehead, who ended a 10-year winless drought at OCFS behind his victory last season on May 22, settled into second place behind early leader Cliff Ehrman during the early stages of the race. Ehrman, in fact, was clicking off laps in excess of 102 miles per hour as he knocked off the five-eighths, mile, hard clay oval in under 22 seconds.

But that quick pace in the early going may have led to Ehrman’s undoing. Because Whitehead was also knocking off laps under 22 seconds as the race went caution-free. The 46-year-old Sussex, N.J., driver was cutting into Ehrman’s cushion as lapped traffic approached and used the slower cars to his advantage.

Ehrman got caught behind Jim Bobbitt while racing on the outside groove between the third and fourth turns on the 16th lap, and Whitehead was able to slip underneath him for the lead.

“Cliff was driving a real good race, but I think he got a little cautious in the lapped traffic,’’ said Whitehead. “He got caught behind that 44 car (Bobbitt) on the top and I was able to slip underneath racing off the fourth turn.’’

Whitehead, an OCFS competitor for 25 seasons, then took advantage of his experience to put some distance between himself and the rest of the 26-car field before the race was cautioned for the only time with 20 laps completed.

But Whitehead quickly regained his cushion when racing resumed and finished nearly three seconds ahead of Ehrman when OCFS starter Jerry Enright displayed the checkered flag. Whitehead just missed making contact with Bobbitt, who spun on the homestretch, after earning the victory.

“I did’t know if the race was checkered or not,’’ said Whitehead. “It looked like the starter was reaching for his yellow flag. That was a close call with Bobbitt, but it sure feels good to get the win. We really needed it.

“We had a good starting position tonight, but will have to come from the back next week. This is a tough place to pass on because there are so many fast cars. But we’ll give it our best and see what happens.’’

Mike Ruggiero, who has one victory this season, turned in a solid third-place performance with Jerry Higbie, Steve Dodd, Tommy Meier, Joe Morel, Bob McGannon, Donnie Wilson and Richie Eurich rounding out the top 10.

Meier, who started 16th, Chuck McKee and Tim Hindley provided the crowd with some thrills during the first half of the race as they advanced through the field on the outside groove. McKee and Hindley faded as the race progressed.

Higbie, who is still seeking his first 2011 victory, earned $500 by capturing the Escape RV Modified elimination race, which was a one-on-one, single-lap competition among the division’s top 10 drivers in points. Mike Kolka reeled off seven straight wins before falling to Higbie, who outraced Meier in the final.

In DIRTcar Sportsman action, John Ferrier, who has raced at the national level in ARCA, reached victory lane for the first time in over three years as he captured the 20-lap main event. It was Ferrier’s first win since May 24, 2008.

Ferrier, who now has eight OCFS career Sportsman triumphs, wrestled the lead away from Andrew Reeves on a sixth-lap restart and then went on to score a narrow victory over Gary Edwards Jr. There was also more stiff competition behind as reigning champion Brian Krummel, Sammy Piazza and Matt Hitchcock followed.

Reeves, who started on the pole, led the first five laps. Reeves, however, spun in the fourth turn to force a caution on the 11th lap while racing among the leaders and finished 20th.

Mike Dutka became the first multiple winner in Pro Stock racing this season as he captured the 15-lap feature ahead of Ron Nuzzaro Jr., Paul Maiolo, Troy Arnold and Russ Nuzzaro.

Dutka, the division’s 2008 track champion, grabbed the lead away from Tommy Vigh Jr. on the 14th lap following a restart and then held on to register back-to-back victories.

“It was a good race and I had a lot of fun out there,’’ said Dutka, through sign language. “I don’t know where he (Vigh) went after that restart. We’re off to a good start this season and are hoping to get a second championship.’’

C.J. Hurtak blasted into first place on the opening green flag and never trailed throughout the 15-lap event to earn his first OCFS career triumph in the Street Stock feature race that went caution-free.

But Hurtak’s road to victory wasn’t easy. The young driver had Charles Donald to deal with at different stages of the event and then held off a late-race charge by Emerson Cargain Sr.

Cargain followed Hurtak across the finish line with Donald, Tyler Thissen and Stephen Kammer rounding out the top five.

OCFS MAY 28th RECAP
Posted: May 30th, 2011

By FRANK CATIZONE

MIDDLETOWN, N.Y. – Chris Shultz knows he didn’t have the fastest car on the track last Saturday night at the Orange County Fair Speedway.

Shultz, in fact, will tell you the outcome might have been different if the checkered flag didn’t fall when it did.

But Shultz, after starting on the pole, still had just enough in the tank to hold off Jeremy Markle for his first victory in over two seasons in the DIRTcar Modified 30-lap main event. The 39-year-old Pawling resident became the fourth different driver to claim a win in 2011 and visited victory lane for the first time since May 23, 2009.

“It’s certainly been a real long time,’’ said Shultz, after claiming his 10th career OCFS Modified triumph. “The track was in real good shape tonight, but I don’t know if I would be standing here right now if the race was a couple of laps longer. I think he (Jeremy) might have gotten me.’’

Shultz, who turned in a quick lap of 22.024 seconds (102.161 miles per hour), assumed command of the race from the start and was sailing well ahead of Don Elliott Jr. as the race progressed. But that cushion came to an abrupt halt with 10 laps completed when Tommy Meier flipped down the backstretch.

Meier, the current points leader, made contact with the outside concrete wall off the second turn, went into a slow rollover and then skidded several feet down the backstretch before entering the third turn. Meier wasn’t injured during the accident, but was forced to the pits.

Shultz continued to lead when racing resumed, but wasn’t as dominant as he was in the early going.

“My car wasn’t as good as it was after the red flag,’’ said Shultz. “I think my tires may have sealed up because I wasn’t getting the same bite that I was early in the race. I don’t know if the outside was starting to go away, but I just didn’t feel as confident racing up there as I did before the accident.’’

Markle raced among the top five throughtout the event and grabbed second place from Elliott just before Meier’s accident. But Markle couldn’t find enough space to get by Shultz, although he snuck a nose underneath him between the first and second turns with two laps remaining.

“That’s the only time I saw Jeremy,’’ said Shultz, “but it was enough to know that I had to guard the bottom. I liked racing the outside, but I knew I had stay down to keep him behind me. There seemed to be a little more bite there because that’s where everyone was putting down some rubber.

“Jeremy is a good clean driver and I knew he wouldn’t do anything. But I think it would have been a different story if the race was a couple laps longer. It would have been his race.’’

Shultz, who was using an old set of Hoosier tires on his Modified, said he’s interested to see how he’ll do now when being forced to start farther back for Saturday’s feature event.

“It should be interesting, but there is an outside groove here,’’ said Shultz. “It’s getting better and better every week. Tommy Meier has found the right set-up on top and it looks like some other drivers are taking their chances outside. We’ll just have to wait and see what happens.’’

Markle settled for a close second behind Shultz with Elliott, Tim Hindley, Richie Eurich, Donnie Wilson, Jerry Higbie, Michael Storms, Craig Mitchell and Cliff Ehrman rounding out the top 10.

Tyler Odendahl, after experiencing engine problems on May 14, started on the pole and led the entire 20-lap distance to register the first victory of his young racing career in the DIRTcar Sportsman feature race.

Odendahl, who averaged 95.811 miles per hour, completed the event in just seven minutes, 49.677 seconds, as the race went caution-free. Zack Vavricka followed in second place with the best finish of his OCFS career.

They were followed across the line by Danny Cronk, Shane Jablonka, Tyler McKee, Brian Krummel, Jimmy Spellmon, Ken Boniface Jr., Dion Naples and Gary Edwards Jr.
In Pro Stock competition, former champion Mike Dutka secured his first victory of the racing campaign as he took the checkered flag ahead of Tommy Vigh Jr., Ron Nuzzaro Jr., Pete VanNoordt and John Velde.

Dutka, the 2008 track titlist, nosed ahead of leader Torin Betterton at the starter’s stand to complete the fourth lap and then went on to easily register his seventh OCFS career win.

Matt Burke blasted into the lead from his sjxth starting position before one lap was completed and then went on to score his second win of 2011 in the Street Stock 15-lap feature event.

Burke, who picked up his last win on May 7, was the class of the 11-car field as he finished ahead of Stephen Kammer, Emerson Cargain Sr., Stan Vishinski Sr. and Charles Donald.

“I sort of got lucky,’’ said Burke. “I went to the top (of the track) and it opened right up for me. I went right into the lead and just started counting off the laps. I don’t know what happened to the rest of those guys.’’

Those guys are primarily Cargain and Donald, who have been battling with Burke for wins during the early part of the season. Cargain and Donald got together while battling for second place on the sixth lap. Donald’s car came up with a front left flat tire and Cargain was sent to the back for rough-riding.

DIRTcar Modified Feature Finish, 30 Laps: 1. Chris Shultz, 2. Jeremy Markle, 3. Don Elliott Jr., 4. Tim Hindley, 5. Richie Eurich, 6. Donnie Wilson, 7. Jerry Higbie, 8. Michael Storms, 9. Jim Bobbitt, 21. Kirk Horton, 22. Chuck McKee, 23. Bill VanInwegen Jr., 24. Chris Whitehead, 25. Tommy Meier, 26. Clinton Mills. Did Not Qualify: Bill Lowden Jr., Bruce Kline.

OCFS MAY 14th RECAP
Posted: May 14th, 2011

By FRANK CATIZONE
MIDDLETOWN, N.Y. – Mike Kolka has gone from rags to riches in one week’s time.

Because Kolka, who was plagued by engine problems on May 7, bounced back last Saturday night to chalk up his first victory of the season in the DIRTcar Modified 30-lap feature at Orange County Fair Speedway.

Kolka, who notched his seventh career OCFS triumph, also locked up a guaranteed starting spot as the track’s representative for the “Friends of Mike’’ 100-lap race at New Egypt Speedway in New Jersey on July 30.

“This was a big pay day for us,’’ said Kolka, who climbed on the roof of his Modified with the checkered flag raised in victory lane. “We really needed this after what happened last week. We broke a rod in the engine and had to go with our other one tonight.

“But this car has been fast all season. We’ve just run into some bad luck. Maybe, things will start turning around.’’

Kolka, who has now claimed one victory in each of the last five seasons, jumped into Bruce Kline’s Modified for the feature a week ago and completed just two laps to earn some points. The move proved valuable as the 32-year-old Circleville driver, after finishing second in his heat, was handicapped on the pole for the main event.

Kolka got the quick jump on Clinton Mills and was dominant throughout the race as he took advantage of only two caution periods to keep some of his stiffer competition behind him.

“My car felt most comfortable right in the middle of the track,’’ said Kolka. “I was able to race just about any place I wanted to, but that was my best line. The track conditions were excellent and have been all year. It’s just that everyone is so fast here. The times are nearly identical for everyone.

“I’m planning on going to New Egypt now because it’s a guaranteed spot. I’m looking forward to representing Orange County in the “Friends for Mike’’ race.’’

Mills drove consistently throughout the event to finish second, but most of the action was behind the top two finishers. Tommy Meier, after brushing the wall earlier, found the outside groove to his liking for the second straight week as he rallied back for a third-place effort.

Gary Tomkins placed fourth aboard the Ray and Debbie Tuit-owned No. 673 for his best showing of the season and Richie Eurich impressed with a top-five effort. They were followed across the line by Jackie Brown Jr., Craig Mitchell, Brett Hearn, Steve Dodd and Jerry Higbie.

Hearn, OCFS’s career leader with 297 victories here, made his first visit of the 2011 campaign after Lebanon Valley Speedway rained out earlier in the day.

Keith Still, after relinquishing a late lead a week ago, finally got it right this time around as he held off Sammy Piazza to register his first career victory in the DIRTcar Sportsman 20-lap feature.

Still, after starting sixth in the 24-car field, overpowered Tyler Odendahl on a sixth-lap restart and never trailed again. But the trip to his initial OCFS win wasn’t an easy one.

Piazza also got past Odendahl on the restart and challenged Still the rest of the event with passing attempts to both the inside and outside grooves. But Still held his line and was able to maintain his momentum off the turns.

Piazza was unable to find an opening to power ahead and finished just 0.099 seconds off Still’s winning pace. Shane Jablonka was close behind in third place, and 2011 feature winners Gary Edwards Jr. and Brian Krummel rounded out the top five.

Russ Nuzzaro bolted from third starting position to first place after OCFS assistant starter Buck Dunning waved the initial green flag and never looked back en route to his first win this season in the Pro Stock 15-lap feature.

The most interesting battle of the 11-car event came behind Nuzzaro as Mike Dutka, Tommy Vigh Jr. and Lebanon Valley Speedway competitor Ivan Joslin waged quite a battle. Dutka and Vigh swapped second place during the race and Joslin was right on their heals.

But Vigh and Joslin tangled in the third turn following a 13th-lap restart as Dutka remained in second. Emerson Cargain Jr. followed Dutka across the finish line with Ron Nuzzaro Jr. following. Vigh rebounded for a fifth-place effort.

Emerson Cargain Sr. became the first multiple winner in full fender competition this season as he grabbed his second victory in the Street Stock 15-lap feature race.

Emerson Cargain Sr., the winningest Street Stock/Pure Stock competitor in OCFS history, passed Charles Donald with an inside move while racing into the third turn on the second lap and then went on to score his 36th career triumph in impressive style.

Donald was able to remain in second place to the checkered flag with Matt Burke, Dave Van Sise and C.J. Hurtak following.

Jake Schlagel was victorious in the Northeast Vintage Modified club’s 2011 debut at the track with Howard Murphy, Stan Wetmore, Stan Vishinski Jr. and Bob Waters following in the 12-lap race.

Schlagel passed Vishinski on the backstretch of the second lap and then ran away from the rest of the 11-car starting field.

Drew Evanyte was racing third before spinning on the backstretch with five laps completed to force the race’s lone caution.

OCFS MAY 7th RECAP
Posted: May 9th, 2011

By FRANK CATIZONE
MIDDLETOWN, N.Y. – Michael Storms has certainly endured his share of adversity during the early part of the 2011 racing season.

But Storms hasn’t let a series of bad luck dampen his spirits. The young, 23-year-old driver from Wantage, N.J., was just thankful for the opportunity to race for Modified car owners Robbie and Randy Sherlock.

Storms, taking full advantage of his starting position, turned his fortunes around last Saturday night and rewarded the Sherlocks with another Orange County Fair Speedway victory as he captured the DIRTcar Modified 30-lap feature in thrilling fashion.

Storms, who led the caution-free event from wire-to-wire, was able to keep far enough ahead to stave off a late-race charge by Tommy Meier when OCFS starter Jerry Enright waved the checkered flags. Meier, who started 14th in the 26-car field, passed John Lieto on the final lap to finish second.

“We’ve certainly had our struggles both here and at Accord Speedway early in the season,’’ said Storms, who picked up his second OCFS career win. “I just can’t thank the Sherlocks enough for sticking behind me. They’re real good people and I’m just so glad that they’ve given me this opportunity to race for them.’’

Storms, who started outside pole, got the quick jump on Billy Wilson when Enright waved the initial green flag and never looked back as he recorded his first win at OCFS since June 28, 2008. Meier was just 0.451 seconds off of Storms’ winning pace.

“This is our primary car at Orange County and it has been fast all season long,’’ said Storms. “We’ve just run into some bad luck with mechanical failures, and I’ve driven too aggressively at times and gotten myself into trouble.

“We had a good starting spot tonight and I took advantage of it. You have to at this track because it is so hard to pass with all the good competition here. I didn’t know how far back Meier was, but I knew he was coming because one of my guys was pointing for me to get going.’’

Lieto, who was competing with a small block engine, finished in second place with Bangor, Pa.’s Jesse Kline, Wilson, Bob McGannon, Richie Eurich, Jeremy Markle, Donnie Wilson and Chris Shultz rounding out the top 10.

The Capital Region Sprint Agency (CRSA) made its season debut with its 305 sprinters and J.R. Hulburt was able to tuck away his first OCFS career victory in the 20-lap main event.

The event was red-flagged in its early stages when Art Kiser made contact with the wall while racing down the homestretch, shot across the track and then flipped just before entering the first turn. Kiser’s car flew over the concrete jersey barrier and nearly made contact with the track’s pace car. The Cooperstown driver limped away from the tremendous crash, but wasn’t seriously injured.

Hulburt regained control when racing resumed and remainded ahead to the rest of the way as he finished ahead of Brett Jaycox, Matt Turner, Jamie Christian and John Cunningham.

It turned out to be quite a big evening for the Tri-State Roofing sponsored racers as Matt Hitchcock joined in on the victory lane celebrations with his first win of the season in the DIRTcar Sportsman 20-lap feature.

Hitchcock grabbed the lead on the 18th lap when Keith Still slowed down for no apparent reason. Hitchcock zoomed past Still and then went on to finish ahead of Eddie Burgess, Tim Paul, Still and Frank Venezia.

Paul Maiolo started on the pole and led the entire 15-lap distance to register his first Pro Stock triumph of the 2011 season ahead of Emerson Cargain Jr., Mike Dutka, Troy Arnold and Ron Nuzzaro Jr.
The Pure Stock 15-lap race was won for the first time this season by Matt Burke. He was followed across the line by Emerson Cargain Sr., Stephen Kammer, Charles Donald and Dave Van Sise.

MIDDLETOWN, NY (May 07)……..On Saturday, May 14, the winner of the 30-lap Modified feature race at Orange County Fair Speedway in Middletown, New York will earn a guaranteed starting spot in the special “Fiends of Mike” 100-lap race to be held Saturday, July 30 at New Jersey’s New Egypt Speedway. “Friends of Mike” honors the late Mike Rogie, a super fan who attended New Egypt Speedway weekly until cancer struck him down at the age of 38.

For the past five years, Mke’s friends have raised thousands of dollars, all of which have gone back to New Egypt’s drivers in the form of bonus checks and special trophies that are awarded on Mike’s tribute night. In a show of solidarity within the greater racing community, the Orange County Modified division will not be racing on July 30, allowing the winner of this week’s (May 14) feature race to travel to and compete at New Egypt Speedway.

The winner of New Egypt’s Friends of Mike race will earn a guaranteed starting spot in October’s Eastern States 200 at Orange County.

In addition to the “Friends of Mike” qualifier on May 14, Orange County’s Sportsman, Pro Stock, and Pure Stocks will be in action with a full program of qualifying and feature races. For the youngsters, the Orange County Kids Club also has activities planned. And as a special bonus, the Northeast Vintage Modifieds will have their restored and replica race cars in action on the Orange County Hard Clay.

Evening and event sponsors for this week’s racing program are Jerry Higbie’s Hig Fab and Hutchings Insurance.

Admission prices for the May 14 race meet remain at $14 adults, $12 seniors, and free for children 12 and under. The full night of racing begins promptly at 6:30 pm.

OCFS APRIL 30th RECAP
Posted: May 2nd, 2011

By FRANK CATIZONE

MIDDLETOWN, N.Y. – A wild night of racing came to a shocking conclusion last Saturday as Mike Ruggiero surprised the Orange County Fair Speedway audience with the first victory of his career in the DIRTcar Modified 30-lap feature.

Ruggiero, a successful campaigner in the Sportsman ranks, made the best of his maiden voyage with Double D Motorsports car owner Darryl Davis as he took advantage of John Lieto’s misfortune to capture an event that saw only nine drivers finish on the lead lap. The 26-year-old Walden driver inherited the lead when Lieto dropped out shortly after completing 25 laps.

“He was smoking and leaking oil for a few laps,’’ said Ruggiero. “I knew he was in trouble, but I didn’t know what was going to happen until his car slowed down and he dropped off the pace.’’

Ruggiero then went on to outrace Joe Morel to the checkered flag as he provided his new car

owner with an unexpected triumph in their first venture together.
“This is the first time I’ve ever driven this car,’’ said Ruggiero, who ironed out the deal with Davis on April 14. “This was supposed to happen a few weeks ago, but the races got rained out here for two weeks.’’

Davis, who has owned cars since 1995, said this racer was the small block Joe Barbagallo used during last year’s Eastern States Weekend. A big block was dropped into the car to let Ruggiero use it on Saturday.

“We’ll take it,’’ said Davis. “This was a great way to start things off and Mike (Ruggiero) can use this car as long as he wants. I have a new 2011 TEO on order and we’ll put the big block in that car when it’s ready.’’

Ruggiero, who won two track titles and 15 features in his OCFS Sportsman career, broke into the Modified ranks a year ago. But his rookie season didn’t turn out too well and he didn’t have his car ready to start the 2011 campaign.

“Last year was kind of rough,’’ said Ruggiero. “I was really hoping to get one (a win) last season, but things just didn’t go our way. It was really great to finally get a win and I can’t thank Darryl David enough for the opportunity. I’m certainly looking forward to racing for him.’’

Lieto, who picked up his first Modified victory last year, looked well en route to another win as he completely dominated the 27-car field.

However, the race was slowed several times during the early going and several cars were forced to retire.

The worst accident happened with nine laps completed when Steve Dodd got into Tim Hindley, who began spinning going into the first turn. Randy Sherlock made contact with Hindley and his Modified went into a vicious flip and landed upside down. Sherlock walked away from the wreck.

However, Hindley wasn’t pleased with Dodd’s involvement in the crash and began walking down the homestretch. Hindley handed his racing helmet to an official, climbed the starter’s stand to grab the black flag, continued down the track and then waved it at Dodd.

Hindley was disqualified for his actions and Dodd, who eventually finished sixth, continued in the race.

The race, which lost 12 cars following Sherlock’s crash, was relegated to single-file restarts as Lieto assumed command once again. But Ruggiero kept Lieto in his sights with a consistent drive and eventually was the benefactor of Lieto’s engine problems.

Morel finished 2.859 seconds behind Ruggiero when OCFS starter Jerry Enright waved the checkered flags. The only other drivers completing 30 laps were Chris Whitehead, Bill VanInwegen Jr., Bruce Kline, Dodd, Jeff Heotzler Sr., Jeff Heotzler Jr. and Jerry Higbie.

Gary Tomkins, who was forced to the pits twice, earned a 10th-place showing despite finishing three laps off Ruggiero’s pace.

Reigning champion Brian Krummel got his season pointed back in the right direction as he led the entire 20-lap distance to score an impressive victory in the DIRTcar Sportsman feature race.

Krummel, who struggled in the season-opener on April 9 with a 23rd-place showing, rebounded quite well en route to his fourth career OCFS triumph. The Middletown driver bolted from his fourth starting position into first place before a lap was scored and then went on to finish more than three seconds ahead of John Lodini.

Frank Venezia utilized a last-lap pass to finish in third place ahead of Shane Jablonka. Rounding out the top 10 were Matt Hitchcock, Jimmy Spellmon, Ken Boniface Jr., Erik Holmgren, Sammy Piazza and Frank Doty.
Spellmon and Piazza both finished among the leaders despite being forced to the rear because of minor accidents. Spellmon spun on the homestretch with seven laps completed and Piazza was involved in a 15th-lap altercation.

Tom Vigh Jr. manhandled his Pro Stock for most of the race to score his first victory of 2011 in the 15-lap main event.

Vigh, after starting on the pole, was able to keep Pete VanNoordt just behind throughout the race as he registered the eighth win of his OCFS career.

“I had no power steering the last 10 laps,’’ said Vigh, who lost his belt on the racing surface. “I knew someone was back there, but I didn’t know who it was. But I knew he was awful close.’’

VanNoordt just could’t muster enough power for a takeover as he settled for a second-place effort ahead of Troy Arnold, Emerson Cargain Jr. and Ron Nuzzaro Jr.

Emerson Cargain Sr. began his quest of another full fender championship as he grabbed his first win of the season in the Street Stock 15-lap main event.

Cargain, after starting on the pole, led the entire race despite showing smoke from the rear of his car during the event’s latter stages. Charles Donald placed second with Matt Burke, Dave Van Sise and John Dore following.

Stephen Kammer crossed the finish line in third place but was disqualified during the post-race inspection.

OCFS APRIL 9th RECAP
Posted: April 10th, 2011

By FRANK CATIZONE
MIDDLETOWN, N.Y. – A quick trip to Atlantic City would have proven profitable for Danny Creeden following last Saturday night’s 2011 season-opening racing program at the Orange County Fair Speedway.

Because luck was on Creeden’s side throughout the evening as OCFS was celebrating its 62nd consecutive campaign of weekly racing around the five-eighths mile, hard clay oval. Creeden, after picking the No. 1 chip to start outside pole for his qualifying race, captured his heat and then went on to score an impressive victory in the DIRTcar Modified 30-lap feature.

OCFS utilizes a heads-up start policy for its openers and Creeden knew just how important it was to grab a single-digit number. The 28-year-old Middletown driver reached into the can and proclaimed he had picked the top chip before handing it to track handicapper Robert Freer.

Freer opened the small envelope holding the chip, looked at it and revealed that Creeden had indeed grabbed inside pole for the first heat event. Creeden then yelled with approval before heading into the pits.

“Track position is so important here because you just don’t know what kind of a racing surface you’re going to be faced with,’’ said Creeden. “But Vinnie (Rotundo) had the surface as smooth as glass tonight and there was more than one lane to race on. The third turn was breaking up just a little bit, but it sure beat the rough track we were faced with a year ago.’’

Creeden praised all the hard work his crew put in during the days leading up to OCFS’s opener. A new 2011 TEO Fabrications chassis was purchased by his car owner, Roger Humeston, and it arrived just two weeks ago. “My crew really busted their butts the last week and a half,’’ said Creeden. “I wouldn’t be here tonight without all of their help. I’ve been with Roger since the 2007 season and this is the same engine I won with two years ago. We just had it freshened up by Danny Bedell of Albany.’’

Ironically, Creeden’s initial Modified victory came in OCFS’s 2009 season opener. He nearly missed the show that evening because of an electrical problem. But, once again, some diligent work by his crew paid off in a big way.

Creeden completely dominated the rest of the 26-car Modified field as he took the checkered flag more than four seconds ahead of Tommy Meier in his new racer’s maiden voyage. The veteran competitor was clicking off laps in the 21-second range and had a best time of :21.362 (105.327 mph) en route to his second career Modified triumph.

“This car was just awesome,’’ said Creeden. “Bobby Hearn really knows how to build a good car and I couldn’t be more pleased with the way it handled tonight. I was really strong in the middle of the track, but I could race it just about anywhere. This just feels great.’’

Creeden, who has now pocketed 19 wins during his racing career, was never challenged throughout the race. After a homestretch pile-up forced the race’s lone caution before a lap was scored, the Middletown chauffer drove flawlessly to the finish.

Jimmy Phelps, making a rare early-season OCFS appearance, and Meier provided the most thrilling racing of the event as they battled for second place. Phelps settled for third in the Wave Energy Drink sponsored No. 98H with reigning champion Jerry Higbie, Chris Shultz, Don Elliott Jr., Mike Kolka, Jesse Kline, Gary Tomkins and Craig Mitchell rounding out the top 10.

Tomkins, who hails from Clifton Springs, N.Y., and Phelps, who resides in Baldwinsville, N.Y., both ventured in excess of four hours to make the OCFS opener. Tomkins, who races the Ray and Debbie Tuit owned No. 673, could be making OCFS his Saturday night home for the 2011 season. Tomkins and his car owners are still weighing their options.

Jeff Heotzler Sr. was slated to compete in Craig Mitchell’s back-up car, but it wasn’t completed for the opener. Other notable drivers missing included Chuck McKee, Ric Hill, Kirk Horton and Greg Sleight.

In Sportsman action, Gary Edwards Jr. stepped down a class and it quickly proved profitable as he posted his first career victory in the 20-lap main event.

Edwards, a Modified campaigner for many seasons, said finances were the main reason for his decision to compete in the Sportsman class. He purchased a crate motor for $3,500 and added the extra components he needed to get his car ready for the season.

“I’m going this route this season,’’ said Edwards, who has seven Modified wins to his credit. “You need a $40,000 engine to be competitive here and I just don’t have that kind of money. This is much more affordable.’’

Edwards’ decision quickly paid off as he outraced Jimmy Spellmon, Sammy Piazza, Erik Holmgren, Frank Venezia, Shane Jablonka, Anthony Perrego, Matt Hitchcock, Matt Janiak and Darrell Ford to the finish.

Edwards, after starting outside pole in the 24-car field, got the jump on Piazza following a second-lap restart and then ran off the win by 2.474 seconds when OCFS starter Jerry Enright waved the checkered flags.

“He got the jump on me on the initial start,’’ said Edwards. “I knew I had to go for it and everything worked out. I knew I had to get the jump on Piazza if I was going to beat him. That proved to be the time to go for it.’’

Rob Yetman was victorious in the Pro Stock 15-lap feature as he finished ahead of Chad Jeseo, Mike Dutka, Russ Nuzzaro and Paul Maiolo.

Bethel Motor Speedway champion Charlie Houghtaling earned his first OCFS career win as he finished ahead of Charles Donald, Stephen Kammer, Matt Burke and Dave Van Sise in the Street Stock 15-lap feature.

MIDDLETOWN, NY (April 8)……..With Opening Night jitters out of the way, the more than 100 Orange County Fair Speedway race car drivers are primed for the second night of exciting stock car racing Saturday night, April 16 at the historic Middletown, New York track. ANTICIPATION!
ORANGE COUNTY FAIR SPEEDWAY OPENS NEXT WEEK
Middletown Track Begins Its 62nd Consecutive Year of Weekly Racing

Posted: April 1st, 2011

MIDDLETOWN, NY (April 1)……..Just one more week! Just one more week until the roar of racing engines brings Orange County Fair Speedway to life for the 62nd consecutive year of weekly stock car racing. That’s Saturday night, April 9, with racing getting the first green flag 6:30 P.M at the historic Middletown, New York five-eighths-mile “Hard Clay” surfaced speedway.

The opening night of action will feature four divisions of DIRTcar-sanctioned race cars---Modifieds, Sportsman, Pro Stocks, and Street Stocks---in qualifying races and main events with the evening’s program sponsored by Country Chevrolet and FDI Bulldog Concrete. The McDoles-sponsored 20-lap Pro Stock feature race will pay $400 to win.

For race fans, Orange County offers three distinct viewing options. Some folks prefer the old-fashioned country fair covered grandstand; others would rather sit in the high-rise half-covered bleachers or the excitement-oriented first turn bleachers. And then there are fans that enjoy an evening of tailgate viewing from the unique Orange County tiered Drive-In section. Whatever the choice, adult admission remains $14. Tickets for senior fans are $12, and kids under 12 are free. All seats are general admission with the exception of season ticket holder reserved seats that are marked with a plaque.

With special events scheduled throughout the season---including community and organizations’ nights, Kids Club activities, vintage racer exhibitions, fireworks, regional sprint cars, demolition derbies, a night of 358 Modified racing, and enduro races---Orange County offers fans a wide range of motorsports entertainment. But the mainstay of the weekly program remains the track’s four weekly racing divisions. That’s topped by the earthshaking Big-Block Modifieds, with the support class Sportsman (restricted Modified-type race cars), late model Pro Stocks, and the always unpredictable Street Stocks.

The season wraps up with the 50th Annual Eastern States Weekend, Friday through Sunday, October 21-23. The Eastern States 200 is the oldest consecutively-run dirt track Modified championship race in the country. The weekend begins with time trials on Friday, heat races Saturday, consolation races and the classic 200-lap feature on Sunday. Joining the “earth shaker” big block Modifieds in their own championship races are the 358 Modifieds, Sportsman, Pro Stock, and Street Stock divisions. Vintage Modifieds and 305 Sprint Cars are also included as part of the three-day bonanza of speed.

To get ready for Opening Night, on Wednesday, April 6, from 5:00 pm until 9:00 pm, the track will host an Open Practice, giving competitors the opportunity to shake down their race cars in preparation for the seven-month-long season. Rain date for the Open Practice is Friday, April 8, also from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm.

Advance ticket sales and track information can be found on the Orange County Fair Speedway website, www.orangecountyfairspeedway.net, or from at the Track Office. Call 845-342-2573 during business hours.

APRIL 9 ORANGE COUNTY FAIR SPEEDWAY OPENER MARKS 62 CONSECUTIVE YEARS OF WEEKLY STOCK CAR RACING
Posted: March 24th, 2011

MIDDLETOWN, NY (March 25)……..The winning driver in the Modified feature on Opening Night at Orange County Fair Speedway will continue a tradition that first began in 1950. While automobile racing traces its Orange County roots back to 1919, weekly stock car racing---the precursors of today’s Modifieds---began on April 16, 1950 and has continued uninterrupted since that memorable date.

The first weekly racing program was held on a small one-fifth-mile asphalt-surfaced track that was located inside the famed five-eighths-mile Hard Clay speedway. Tex Enright, who later gained fame as a colorful race starter was the day’s winner, his only Orange County victory of record. Since then, 35 other drivers have won season openers, led by all-time track record holder Brett Hearn, who has tasted first night victory champagne nine times.

Other multi-time Opening Night winners include Carl Van Horn who captured four Modified features; three-time Opening Night victors Bobby Bottcher, Will Cagle, Rich Eurich, and Jeff Heotzler; with Frank Cozze, Bud Marl, Chuck McKee, Frankie Schneider, Al Tasnady, and Bill Wimble each winning two openers.

Drivers who have raced at Orange County on a weekly basis some or all of their careers have won the vast majority of Opening Night feature races. But that hasn’t always been the case. The first outside invader to take home the season opener top prize was Hartford, Connecticut driver Dick Fletcher back in 1954 Then in the 1960s, Flemington (New Jersey) Speedway great Al Tasnady won two Orange County openers, as did Fonda (New York) Speedway champ Bill Wimble.

In 1983, C.D. Coville, from Upstate New York, ushered in the DIRT Motorsports era by winning the first race under Glenn Donnelly’s reign. “Barefoot” Bob McCreadie, from Watertown, New York, took the local boys to task in 1985, while Jack Johnson, whose home track was also Fonda Speedway, won in 1995, the last outside invader to win on Opening Night.

Winning Opening Night Modified features the past five years were Craig Mitchell (2006), Mike Kolka (2007) Brett Hearn (2008 and 2010), and Danny Creeden (2009). Mitchell, Kolka, and Creeden are expected to be among the more than three-dozen Modified drivers hoping to start their 2011 season with a victory. And who knows, there’s always the possibility an outside invader will pull into the Orange County pits and take home the Opening Night top prize money.

It will all play out on Saturday, April 18, 2009 and the start of the 62nd consecutive season of weekly stock car racing at Orange County Fair Speedway. Will a new Opening Night winner’s name be added to the long list of great Orange County drivers? Or will one of the pervious victors take the checkered flag once again? Racing begins at 6:30 P.M at the historic Middletown, New York five-eights-mile “Hard Clay” surfaced speedway. Opening Night will include four divisions of race cars---Modifieds, Sportsman, Pro Stocks, and Street Stocks---in qualifying races and main events with the evening’s program sponsored by Country Chevrolet and FDI Bulldog Concrete. The Pro Stock feature will be sponsored by McDoles.

Advance ticket sales and additional information is available at the Track Office. Call 845-342-2573 during business hours. Fans and competitors are reminded to visit the speedway website for the latest track news: www.orangecountyfairspeedway.net.

For the second consecutive year, the July 30 race will find the 358 Modifieds battling for a $2,500-to-win top prize with the winner earning the outside pole position for the Eastern States 358 Modified Championship race.

Two pre-season activities are also on the schedule. On Saturday, March 26, everyone is invited to come out and participate in Spruce-Up Day, a chance to meet with fellow racing fans and help get the speedway ready for Opening Night.

Then on Wednesday, April 6, from 5:00 pm until 9:00 pm, the track will host an Open Practice, giving competitors the opportunity to shake down their race cars in preparation for the seven-month-long season. Rain date for the Open Practice is Friday, April 8, also from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm.

“It’s a full schedule with something for every race fan,” said Gurda. “We’re looking forward to seeing everyone at the track.”

ORANGE COUNTY FAIR SPEEDWAY TO BE DIRTcar-SANCTIONED
Posted: February 9th, 2011

MIDDLETOWN, NY (February 10)......The historic Orange County Fair Speedway will open for its 62nd consecutive year of weekly stock car racing Saturday night, April 16, once again under the DIRTcar sanctioning banner.

“We’re really looking forward to the new season,” said Orange County promoter Mike Gurda. ”The decision to return to DIRTcar sanctioning was not made lightly. We considered all our options and determined the benefits of being part of the DIRTcar circuit to be in everyone’s best interest.”

A return to DIRTcar sanctioning will put the racers back on Hoosier-brand tires. But the competitors will have several weeks to use up their stock of American Racer tires that were utilized during the track’s previous independent status. In addition, certain established Orange County rules regarding car and engine specifications will remain in effect. “We will continue to allow Orange County “open” engines in the Sportsman division,” said Gurda. “We’ll have all these and other rules questions answered in the next few weeks.”

The full season schedule, including special events and activities, will be available shortly.

Already set, however, is the season finale, the 50th Annual Eastern States Weekend, this year Friday through Sunday, October 21-23. The Eastern States 200 is the oldest consecutively-run dirt track Modified championship race in the country.

The Speedway Office is now open, Tuesday through Friday, 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM and is accepting orders for grandstand and pit season passes. Call 845-342-2573. Updated information regarding the schedule and other information will soon be available on the Orange County Fair Speedway website, www.orangecountyfairspeedway.net.

Eastern States 200 Recap

MIDDLETOWN – Tim McCreadie isn’t about to apologize for winning Sunday afternoon’s controversial Eastern States Modified 200-lap championship race at the Orange County Fair Speedway.

But McCreadie admits that he was fortunate to be sitting in victory lane following the 49th running of this prestigious dirt-track event that concluded OCFS’s annual Eastern States Weekend Racing Festival.

McCreadie, after being placed first over apparent leader Stewart Friesen with 184 laps completed, held off the late-race upset bid provided by Middletown’s Clinton Mills to earn his first Eastern States crown and the winning payoff of $20,000. The second-generation driver from Watertown joins his father “Barefoot’’ Bob McCreadie as the only father-son duo to ever capture this event.

“This is pretty amazing,’’ said Tim McCreadie, whose father Bob won his only Eastern States championship in 1994. “I watched my father race here over the years and have raced here myself. But I haven’t had much luck in the past. To join him as an Eastern States champion is pretty incredible.’’

McCreadie, who has enjoyed success racing late models throughout the country, inherited second place behind Friesen on the 170th lap when leader Randy Sherlock slowed racing with a flat tire. Mills was able to sneak by McCreadie for second while driving the outside groove 10 laps later and set his sights on Friesen.

But the caution flag flew again on lap 181 for Mike Ruggiero in the second turn. McCreadie snuck past Mills on the restart a lap later – just in time for what would become perhaps the most controversial event in Eastern States history.

Craig Mitchell got into the inside jersey barrier following a restart on the 184th lap and McCreadie was declared the leader by nine one hundredths of a second on the electronic transponder when crossing the starter’s stand. Each driver has a device in their cars that is picked up by the track’s computerized scoring system when crossing the finish line.

That set off a wild series of events as track officials tried to get the cars in their proper racing order, but Friesen refused to drop into second place. The talented Candian driver, who won this year’s Modified championship in Syracuse, first passed the pace car under caution and was eventually blackflagged when refusing to yield first place. The laps, meanwhile, continued to tick off under caution and a chorus of boos was heard throughout the speedway.

Friesen, who was unavailable for comment, hit the pace car with his Modified racer and was ordered to the pits by track starter Jerry Enright. But Friesen stopped his car in the first turn, exited his racer and headed towards the starter’s stand to force a red flag with 192 laps in the records books.

Friesen tried to reach the starter’s stand, but was intercepted by track security. He then went back to his car and refused to move off the racing surface. A tow track was summoned, but Friesen eventually moved his car.

A fight broke out in the pits moments later as tempers flared throughout the speedway. When the smoke finally cleared, track scorers reviewed the transponder report on lap 184 and McCreadie was shown as the leader. Track officials decided to let Friesen fall in the rear of the field and the race was finally continued after a lengthy delay.

McCreadie, meanwhile, was just as confused as everyone else when he assumed first place. He throught track officials might have penalized Friesen for jumping the start.

“I was surprised I was declared the leader because I didn’t pass Stewart,’’ said McCreadie. “I thought he might have jumped the start. We were told not to take off too early on the restarts and I thought they might have penalized him for that.

“It was unfortunate for Stewart and I feel sorry for him. But I know just exactly how he must feel. I’ve had this happen to me in the past at Syracuse when I felt I should have won. It’s unfortunate, but I’m not about to apologize for winning this race. We’ve run into some had luck ourselves lately, and it’s about time that something finally broke our way.’’

Still, McCreadie didn’t think he had a winning car as the race entered its latter stages. Mills, who started 36th in this talented 44-car field, was making quick tracks towards the front on the outside rim and had the hometown crowd applauding his efforts each lap. Mills races weekly at OCFS and the crowd was buzzing over the possibility of one of the biggest surprises in Eastern States history.

“We were sitting ducks,’’ admitted McCreadie. “I don’t know who this Mills was, but he definitely had the fastest car on the track. Both Stewart and I really had nothing left for him as the race progressed.

“But that long delay helped me and probably cost Mills the race. My car was much better when we started again, but it probably cost him. But I have to admit that I was scared to death the last 10 laps. I was also nervous following that last caution.’’

Mills would never get a chance to challenge McCreadie, who built a comfortable cushion to the checkered flag. But he received the biggest applause from the crowd during the post-race festivities.

“This was the greatest race of my life,’’ said Mills. “I was getting thumbs up from a lot of people from the drive-in and it was just fantastic. This was just like a win for me.

“I just hope this effort will show all of my non fans out there that I’m no sandbagger. Gary Edwards does a great job building the motors for this car and we can really be good when everything is right. I was able to find a real good line on the outside as the race progressed and was able to pass almost any place I wanted to on the track.

Sherlock, who wound up 18th, gained first place on the 90th lap from Chris Shultz and remained there until getting his flat tire 80 laps later. But Sherlock still had to go to the pits before the race concluded as he never took his mandatory stop. All drivers had to pit once after the 60th lap.

Friesen, who set fast time around the five-eighths mile, hard clay oval with a single-lap clocking of 21.225 seconds (106.007 miles per hour), started on the pole and led for the first 22 laps. Former champion Billy Decker assumed the point on the 23rd circuit when he passed Friesen while racing down the homestretch.

Decker, who recorded a third-place finish, remained out in front until Friesen regained first place with a pass entering the first turn on the 52nd circuit. Friesen relinquished the lead when he took his mandatory pit stop along with a parade of drivers under caution with 68 laps completed.

Shultz, who stayed on the racing surface, inherited first place when Friesen pitted and remained there until Sherlock took command on the 90th circuit. Sherlock, who led the race longer than anyone, surrendered the top spot to Friesen with a flat tire on lap 170.

But Friesen’s bid to become the first Canadian to win an Eastern States championship was shattered 14 laps later when the track’s transponder put McCreadie in first place. Friesen wound up placing 20th.

Reigning champion Jerry Higbie Jr, settled for a fourth-place effort and his car owner Mike Petruska had his string of three consecutive wins broken. Petruska claimed crowns with three different drivers in his Atlas Paving No. 66.
Shultz wound up with a solid fifth-place effort with Chuck McKee, Tommy Meier, David Van Horn Jr., Ken Tremont Jr., and Steve Dodd rounding out the top 10.

Eastern States 100 Recap

MIDDLETOWN – Brett Hearn’s visits to the Orange County Fair Speedway have dwindled the past two seasons.
But that hasn’t curtailed Hearn’s ability to navigate the fast away around the five-eighths mile, hard clay oval.

Hearn, the biggest winner in the track’s rich history, continued his dominance of Eastern States events last Saturday afternoon by posting a record-setting fourth straight victory in the 358 Modified championship race.

Hearn, who has reached victory lane an astounding 297 times since his OCFS racing career began in 1976, has won this race 13 times during its 34-year history. The 52-year-old driver from Sussex, N.J., pushed his career mark to 788 triumphs behind his 17th win during the 2010 campaign.

“I really can’t put a finger on it,’’ said Hearn, referring to his success in the 358 Modified race. “This race has really been good to me through the years. It doesn’t matter if I start up front or in the back. I’ve just been extremely fortunate in this particular race.’’

Hearn and Doug Hoffman shared the previous record of winning three consecutive Eastern States small block titles. Hoffman was the first to accomplish the feat from 1982-84 and Hearn matched the standard from ’85-’87.

Hearn, who pocketed $7,470, which included lap money, for his winning drive, qualified for the 100-lap grind by posting the third quickest clocking in time trials with a run of 20.922 seconds (107.542 mph). That gave him the fourth starting position for the 40-car field as Tommy Meier was already guaranteed the outside pole by virtue of his OCFS small block victory on July 31.

Hearn wasted no time taking control as he blasted ahead of both Jerry Higbie and Tim McCreadie at the drop of starter Jerry Enright’s initial green flag to stand second behind Meier.

Meier would lead the field for only two laps as Hearn found an opening to the inside between the first and second turns on lap three and sailed out in front.

“I was going to take whatever was presented to me,’’ said Hearn. “I was pretty aggressive early in the race. I think Jerry (Higbie) was surprised I went right after it early on. But I wanted to get out in front as early as possible.’’

Hearn, who never trailed again, encountered some stiff competition from McCreadie and Pat Ward during the race. He also had some close calls with lapped traffic. There were also several restarts to deal with as 15 cautions marred the race.

But Hearn never wavered. He knew he had a strong car and felt confident about his chances of winning.
“This car has just been so good to me,’’ said Hearn. “This was our race all the way.’’

Hearn’s march to the 124th small block victory of his OCFS career was slowed five times during the first 23 laps for minor accidents. Higbie, who started on the pole, was forced to the pits twice during that span with flat tires on both right side tires. Higbie eventually dropped out with no brakes after completing 52 laps.

Hearn continued to lead following Higbie’s right rear flat until New Egypt (N.J.) Speedway track champion Rich Laubach forced another caution 33 laps into the event with a deflated right rear sneaker on the Dieter Schmidt owned No. 5.

Racing was slowed two more times during the next seven laps before action was red-flagged on the 42nd circuit because of a pile-up in the second turn. Danny Johnson was responsible for causing the melee when he made contact with the inside Jersey barrier, and shot across the track to force a chain-reaction of cars crashing into each other.

Johnson, who raced among the leaders throughout the race, was able to continue and eventually finished in third place. However, Bobby Varin, Chris Shultz and Ken Tremont Jr. weren’t as fortunate.

McCreadie, who shadowed Hearn and Ward since the 22nd lap, was able to get an edge on Ward during the restart and moved into second place for good on the 43rd circuit. But McCreadie, despite closing in on Hearn through lapped traffic, never mounted a serious challenge for the lead.

McCreadie was able to close right in on Hearn on a few occasions, but he never was able to find the room for a takeover.

“It is what it is,’’ McCreadie said. “The track was pretty much down to just one lane and there wasn’t enough space to pass him. I had a good run at him for some 15 to 20 laps, but I just couldn’t get close enough to make a pass.

“But I’m not going to complain about it. We had a good run and this is the best finish I’ve ever had at this place. Hopefully, we can go a step further in tomorrow’s (last Sunday’s) 200-lapper.’’

Hearn, meanwhile, had some anxious moments with lapped traffic as the race progressed and barely escaped disaster on a number of occasions.

“Luckily, I was able to stay free of trouble,’’ said Hearn. “I had a real close call with the 16R (Richard Smith) in the first turn. It was a little hairy down there because I didn’t know what he was going to do. He was driving right in my lane and he nearly took me out.’’

Hearn also had some trouble getting past Corey Ziegler in the first turn on the 84th lap. But his closest flirt with disaster came on the homestretch when both Jeremy Markle and Dave Hinsch spun in front of him on the 88th lap.
“I really had to get on the binders when those two cars spun in front of me on the homestretch,’’ explained Hearn. “That was a real close one. I just missed getting collected in that one.’’

But Hearn was able to avoid the homestretch incident and was able to change his luck a bit. The driving legend has been plagued by some tough luck late in races during the 2010 season.

“We break parts on our cars just like everyone else,’’ said Hearn. “We’ve been saddled with some bad luck this season and it has cost me some wins. Hopefully, this will change my fortunes.’’

Jeff Heotzler Sr. was able to secure a solid fourth-place effort with Meier, Stewart Friesen, Billy Decker, Tim Fuller, Wayne Jelley and Danny Creeden rounding out the top 10.

Eastern States 50 Recap

MIDDLETOWN – Young driving sensation Sammy Piazza put an exclamation point on his short Sportsman racing career last Saturday night as he scored an overwhelming victory in the Eastern States 50-lap championship race at the Orange County Fair Speedway.

Piazza, who isn’t even old enough to apply for his driving permit yet in New Jersey, started on the pole and led the entire distance to post his biggest victory ever. It was triumph worth more than $2,000 for Piazza, who will be making a climb to the Modified ranks in 2011.

“I’m definitely moving up next season,’’ said Piazza. “But I don’t know if it will be in the Modified or 358 Modified class. That is still yet to be determined.’’

Piazza, a 15-year-old Lawrenceville, N.J., resident, posted the quickest lap in time trials to earn the inside pole against 32 other competitors in the 50-lap main event . But they were no match for Piazza, who was able to build tremendous leads en route to the checkered flag.

“This is my biggest win ever,’’ said Piazza, after posting his third OCFS triumph of the season. “The car was just perfect and I have to thank my crew for that. I also want to thank my parents for all of their support. They pay for everything and I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for them.’’

Last year’s winner Matt Hitchcock finished a distant second to Piazza with Bobby Hentschel, Anthony Perrego and Brian Krummel rounding out the top five.

OCFS champion Emerson Cargain Sr. was handed his eighth win of the season in the Pure Stock ranks when Bob Palmer was disqualified during the post-race inspection following their 20-lap championship.

Palmer, a Lebanon Valley Speedway driver, moved past Cargain off the fourth turn on the sixth lap and nev er trailed again. But he was penalized for an unspecified technical violation and was stripped of the win.

The infraction pushed Kyle Pepin up to second place with Matt Burke, Charles Donald and Charlie Houghtaling rounding out the top five.

There was also a disqualification in Sunday afternoon Pro Stock race as Jay Casey was declared the winner of the 30-lap championship race.

Rob Yetman actually took the checkered flag first, but was penalized for using an illegal carburetor. It was the same infraction that proved costly to Yetman in Syracuse.

OCFS titlist Don Carlson followed in second place with Sean Corr, Jason Casey and Rocky Warner following.
Jeff Richardson earned an Eastern States championship as he captured the Northeast Vintage Modified 20-lap main event.
